NPL sides seek progress in FA Cup replays

By James Gordon

A number of NPL sides are in FA Cup first qualifying round replay action this midweek.

There are nine ties involving our clubs, including five all-NPL match-ups.

A mouth-watering potential clash between FC United and City of Liverpool is on the cards in the second qualifying round - if both can navigate replays away at Atherton Collieries and at home to Warrington Town respectively.

City of Liverpool were denied by the Yellows on Saturday through Josh Amis’ 90th minute header.

There was also a late goal at Scarborough on Saturday, as Matthew Waters earned Marske United a replay, with the prize a trip to National League North side Southport in the next round.

A home tie with Thornaby or Ossett United awaits the winners of Colne and South Shields, with the BetVictor Northern Premier N/West side having earned a superb goalless draw at Mariners Park on Saturday.

Ossett were denied victory at the weekend by an own goal in the fourth minute of injury time, and will be hoping Tom Greaves can repeat his brace and this time fire them to victory.

Ashton United’s poor start to the season was on the verge of going from bad to worse but for Connor Hughes’ equaliser against Tadcaster Albion in a 2-2 draw on Saturday, and they will go again at Hurst Cross tonight to secure a home game against Pontefract Collieries.

Facing non-NPL opposition are Gainsborough Trinity, who host Banbury United having drawn 2-2 away on Saturday, and Sutton Coldfield Town, who will travel to Redditch United.

A trip to Kettering awaits Sutton Coldfield should they progress.

The aforementioned eight ties are all on Tuesday night, with just one on Wednesday - as Lancaster City face a tricky trip to Northwich Victoria.

The Dolly Blues were held to a goalless draw by Vics on Saturday, and Vics have already claimed one NPL scalp this season - having knocked out Prescot Cables in the previous round.
