Old foes reunited for milestone

By David Watters

Workington stalwart Kyle May is looking forward to hanging up his well-worn boots at the end of the season after making his 500th appearance for the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's Reds.

The central defender is set to say his goodbyes in mid-June at a testimonial dinner in his honour after making the milestone appearance before Easter in Workington's 2-1 win at Mickleover Sports in the EVO-STIK NPL's top flight.

May made his debut back on the opening day of the 2004-05 season when Workington inflicted a 4-0 defeat upon Matlock Town in the then Unibond Premier League. By a remarkable coincidence, one of his opponents that day was Craig Hopkins and the pair were reunited at Don Amott Arena last Tuesday night where Hopkins is now assistant manager.

The 34-year-old May, pictured left, eased passed Bobby Brown’s long standing club appearance record of 469 appearances earlier this season before going on to reach this personal milestone with an accumulation of 425 league appearances and 75 in cup and play-off matches in 12 seasons at Borough Park.
