Oldest derby for world's oldest club

Officials at the world's oldest football club are looking forward to hosting Northern Counties East League Hallam FC at The BT Local Stadium in Dronfield on Sunday in a 2pm kick-off as they prepare to celebrate the EVO-STIK League South club's 160th birthday this season.

First played on Boxing Day 1860, the "Rules Derby" is the oldest fixture in world football with the name referring to the game being originally being played under the "Sheffield Rules". Although the derby is no longer a calendar fixture, the two clubs ensure it occurs annually to maintain the tradition of football’s oldest match.

After winning their first meeting at Hallam's home at Sandygate Lane, now the world's oldest football ground, the EVO-STIK League South club's chairman Richard Tims is hoping a big crowd will turn out to see another victory in the 157th running of the historic fixture.

He said: "It’s a great derby and a great tradition, one which has forever been based on football’s original values of integrity, respect and community. The 157th derby year is particularly special for us with Sheffield FC turning 160 years old in less than a 100 days time. We can’t wait for the match to celebrate football’s history once again and seeing all the fans who come to watch."
