Play-off chasers slip up

By James Gordon

Two promotion contenders in the Northern Premier League Premier Division slipped up on Tuesday night.

Former league leaders Matlock Town were held to a goalless draw at home by Radcliffe, leaving them with just one win in 11 outings.

Whitby, currently just outside of the play-off places, missed their chance to leapfrog Warrington Town in to fifth spot as they were beaten 2-1 at Stalybridge Celtic.

Elsewhere in the Premier Division, struggling Witton Albion could only manage a point at Atherton Collieries as their prospects of avoiding relegation look increasingly bleak.

A late Kai Moore goal helped Mickleover fightback from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Bamber Bridge.

In the East Division, Liversedge returned to the top of the table with a 3-1 win away at Pickering Town.

Dropped points at the weekend saw them lose top spot to rivals Marske United, but they return first by a point, albeit having played a game more.

Dunston and Brighouse Town kept up their play-off hopes with wins over Sheffield and Tadcaster Albion respectively.

Clitheroe moved within five points of the play-off places in the West Division with a 2-1 win at Bootle, while 1874 Northwich were 1-0 winners at Newcastle Town.

After Saturday’s abandonment due to a serious injury, Shepshed Dynamo beat 3-1 Belper Town in the re-arranged game in the Midlands Division.

Jakub Niemczyk suffered a broken leg and broken ribs in the first game, which was abandoned after 37 minutes.

Well wishers from across the football community have passed on messages since the game, and a bucket collection was held at the game on Tuesday night.

Both clubs have been praised for their response and professionalism in dealing with the incident.
