Premier Division round-up: Ashton United hit for six, Rylands move into play-off spots

By James Gordon

South Shields began 2023 in perfect fashion as a 1-0 victory at Morpeth Town maintained their three-point cushion at the top of the Northern Premier League.

Tom Broadbent netted his second goal in as many matches as the Mariners kicked off the new year with a priceless three points on the road against local opposition.

In the race to catch them, second-placed Hyde United were resounding 6-0 winners away at Ashton United.

Tom Pratt and Matthew Fearnley both scored in either half, with Liam Tongue and Manasse Mampala also getting in on the act.

Gainsborough Trinity remain close behind in third after their 3-0 win at home to Matlock Town.

Curtis Durose, Liam Waldock and Claton Donaldson were all on target for the Holy Blues in their first league fixture in almost a month.

Elsewhere, Bamber Bridge struck late to beat Guiseley 2-1 at the Sir Tom Finney Stadium.

Sheldon Green’s 13th minute opener had been cancelled out two minutes after half-time by Lewis Whitham’s fourth goal of the season, only for Paul Dawson to head home the winner nine minutes from time.

Warrington Rylands climbed into the play-off spots with a 3-1 win at Marine.

Kelly N’Mai scored twice for the Blues, while Scott Duxbury also netted on the stroke of half-time.

In another of the day’s local rivalries, Radcliffe beat FC United 1-0 thanks to Rick Smith’s goal just five minutes into the contest at Stainton Park.

And in Monday’s Cheshire derby, Warrington Town came from behind to draw 1-1 with Nantwich Town.

Mo Malumo netted inside the opening 10 seconds for the Dabbers, but Andy White equalised shortly before half-time with his first Yellows goal.

Meanwhile, Belper Town climbed off the foot of the table with a 2-1 win at home to Stafford Rangers, while Atherton Collieries and Lancaster City played out a 1-1 draw at the Skuna Stadium.

And finally, a Matty Carson hat-trick helped Stalybridge Celtic to an entertaining 4-2 victory at home to Liversedge.

All of Celtic’s goals came in the second half, with top scorer Raul Correia completing their scoring 20 minutes from time.

The afternoon’si only other fixture between Whitby Town and Marske United was postponed following a pitch inspection.
