Premier Division Round-Up: Battle at the top of the table

By James Gordon

Just three points separate five teams at the top of the Northern Premier League Premier division, as the race for the title heats up.

The pick of the bunch was the battle for fourth place between Warrington Town and Bamber Bridge, who were separated by 4 points before the encounter.

Bamber Bridge came into this game with the best away record in the league, however, it would be the Yellows who struck first four minutes from half time thanks to Mitchell Duggan’s excellent headed goal which found the far corner - his first league goal in more than four years.

The second half saw both teams battle it out, and it was anyone’s game up until Warrington handed Bamber Bridge a second blow following Evan Gumbs’ goal on the hour mark.

The Yellows pressed their advantage and made it 3-0 just two minutes later, with a goal from Josh Amis.

Warrington capped off their performance in front of a packed crowd of 842 with a 71st minute penalty from Sean Williams.

Isaac Sinclair would earn Bamber Bridge a consolation goal nine minutes from time, however, it would not be enough, now with just one point separating both teams.

As a result of Bamber Bridge’s loss, South Shields move into third following a 1-0 victory against Scarborough thanks to Will McGowan’s 23rd minute strike - who has now scored in three successive home matches.

Buxton missed out on the opportunity to move into first place as they suffered a 2-3 defeat at home to Stafford Rangers.

An 85th minute equaliser from Ethan Stewart and an 88th minute winner from Jake Charles ensured that Stafford Rangers snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

Elsewhere in the division, Grantham Town, who sit at the bottom of the division recorded their fourth win of the season away at Basford United, thanks to a first-half goal from Shane Clarke, as they look to find a run of form to move out of the relegation zone.

19th placed Mickleover earned a crucial 4-1 victory over Hyde United, who moved two points above Witton Albion and out of the relegation zone.

FC United’s attempts to achieve a five-game win streak and to push for a play-off spot were stalled away to Radcliffe in a 3-3 draw.

Whitby Town fell out of a play-off spot into 6th place following a 2-0 defeat away to Morpeth Town.

Meanwhile, Lancaster City and Atherton Collieries were held to a 0-0 stalemate at the Giant Axe.
