Premier Division Round-up: One point separates the top two

By James Gordon

The gap at the top of the Northern Premier League Premier Division is down to just one point after South Shields claimed a 2-1 victory against Atherton Collieries.

Kevin Phillips’ men were three points behind current league leaders Matlock Town heading into this fixture, and had hit a stumbling block in their hopes of claiming the top spot after failing to record a win in their previous two fixtures.

The Mariners took the lead on eleven minutes thanks to Sam Hodgson converting a rebound, which is now three goals in his last four appearances.

Atherton however would peg them back with a goal of their own six minutes later when Gareth Peet put one past Myles Boney.

Despite the scoreline, the Mariners dominated much of the game, and just two minutes after the interval they got their reward with Nathan Lowe finishing, giving his team a crucial three points going into their next game against Mickleover in midweek.

League leaders Matlock were held to a 2-2 draw against play-off chasing Whitby Town. The Gladiators’ resolve was tested as they came back from behind twice to come away with a point.

Elsewhere towards the top of the table, a Jamie Ward brace and a finish by Mackenzie Heaney completed a comeback for Buxton who claimed a 3-1 victory against Nantwich Town who sit in 20th place. The Bucks are now just one point behind the Mariners going into their next fixture.

Scarborough also sit just one point behind Buxton as they beat Lancaster 2-0 at the Giant Axe thanks to goals from Ryan Watson and Michael Coulson.

Hyde came from behind to claim a much needed 2-1 victory over Warrington Town. Two late goals from Harry Ditchfield in the 81st minute and Lewis Earl in the 89th minute gave the Tigers their first win since 11th December.

Stafford Rangers came away with an impressive 1-3 win against Bamber Bridge which moved them above Morpeth Town into ninth place.

FC United’s hopes of chasing a play-off spot have been dented as they suffered a 3-2 defeat away to Gainsborough.

Mickleover claimed a big three points as they dispatched Radcliffe 4-1 at home, with Stuart Beavon playing a vital role in the win with his hattrick.

Lowly Witton were beaten 2-0 at home by Stalybridge Celtic and stayed in 21st place, whereas Basford and Ashton United’s encounter finished in a goalless stalemate.
