Premier Division round-up: Six-goal thriller at South Shields, Late goals aplenty

By James Gordon

South Shields remain top of the Northern Premier League, despite letting slip a late two-goal lead at home to Ashton United.

Goals from Darius Osei, Jordy Mongoy and Martin Smith had set the Mariners on course for a much-needed win, but goals in the 83rd and 90th minute ensured the Robins would return to the north-west with a point.

Shields’ lead at the division’s summit now stands at just one point, with Hyde United closing the gap and climbing up to second after a 1-0 victory over fellow high-flyers Gainsborough Trinity.

Sonny Whittinham’s early finish was enough to end the Holy Blues’ unbeaten league record on the road this season.

Meanwhile, a Sol Solomon double helped Marine to a 3-1 win at Lancaster City.

Dale Whitham’s goal just before the hour mark had given the Dolly Blues a glimmer of hope, but substitute Connor Evans came off the bench to seal all three points in the final moments.

Bamber Bridge moved into the play-off places with a 2-1 victory at Marske United.

All three goals came from the penalty spot, with Macauley Wilson holding his nerve twice from 12 yards out for the Brig - the second of which came at the death.

Warrington Town slipped further into the chasing pack after they were frustrated by Stalybridge Celtic at Cantilever Park.

Midfielder Jay Harris had given the Yellows an early lead, but a defensive error was pounced upon by Osebi Abadaki as Stalybridge secured a well-earned 1-1 draw.

At the Proctors Cars Stadium, Radcliffe left it late to rescue a 2-2 draw at Matlock Town.

In a topsy-turvy encounter in Derbyshire, Boro came from behind twice to earn a point, with debutant Connor O’Brien scrambling home an equaliser deep into second half stoppage time.

There was no such drama at FC United of Manchester, who ran out convincing 2-0 winners over struggling Belper Town.

Finlay Armstrong broke the deadlock midway through the second half, with top scorer Regan Linney netting his 20th goal of the season in the closing stages to wrap up the points.

Elsewhere, Warrington Rylands were beaten late in the day on home soil as Nantwich Town snatched a 1-0 victory.

A fine finish from Curtis Morrison won it for the Dabbers as they recorded their fifth win in six matches in all competitions.

Atherton Collieries recorded just their second league win in 10 matches after coming from behind to beat Stafford Rangers 2-1.

It took just two minutes for Rangers to hit the front through Luis Morrison, but Adam Rooney levelled before the 15-minute mark and Scott Bakker completed the turnaround shortly after half-time.

Guiseley climbed to 15th as they left it late to beat Morpeth Town 1-0.

Callum Chippendale saw his stoppage time penalty saved, but Lewis Whitham was in the right place to tuck home the rebound for the Lions as they got off to a winning start under new manager Paul Phillips.

And finally, Whitby Town made it three games unbeaten with a 3-0 win at Liversedge.

Jacob Day scored in either half for the Seasiders, with Harrison Beeden also netting in the first half.
