Premier Preview: Buxton test for league leaders

By James Gordon

Table-topping Farsley Celtic have a battle to keep their advantage at the top of the EVO-STIK League Premier Division when they travel to fifth-placed Buxton at Silverlands.

The two sides drew 1-1 earlier in the season, and with the pressure for results intensifying as the weeks tick by, this could prove to be a defining clash in both the race for top spot and the battle for the top five.

Buxton currently occupy the final play-off spot, and with Gainsborough facing a battle to end their two-game losing streak at home to Hyde United, a win for Bucks could give their end-of-season aspirations an almighty boost.

Farsley dropping points could mean that South Shields end the day on top spot, but only if they can extend their four-game winning run at home to a Hednesford side unbeaten in their last six.

Meanwhile, Warrington will look to build on last week’s dramatic late win against Stafford as they travel to face Matlock, who haven’t won at Causeway Lane in their last six attempts.

With a play-off spot seemingly assured, Nantwich Town have a good chance to build some momentum as they take on Mickleover, who currently reside in the relegation zone.

Further down the table, Basford and Stalybridge face off at Bower Fold. United cannot afford to drop anymore points if they are to keep their slim hope of making the end-of-season play-offs, whereas the Celts can ease their relegation fears with a win.

Witton Albion have the chance to dent Workington’s chances of staying in the division when the two teams meet at Wincham Park, while Marine will look to extend their run of just two defeats in the last nine on the road when they visit Whitby’s Turnbull Ground.

In the final games of the round, Scarborough will look to end their three-game winless run and keep the pressure on the sides above them as they travel to Bamber Bridge, while Grantham can leapfrog opponents Lancaster and end the day as high as 12th with a win at the Giant Axe.
