Premier Preview: Mariners return to league action

By James Gordon

South Shields return to league action following their FA Trophy action against Southport, which saw them knocked out of the cup in the Tuesday night replay at the Pure Stadium.

The Mariners remain at the top of the table with 36 points, and drew 2-2 with National League North side Southport before losing away from home midweek.

They take on fifth-placed Radcliffe, who got back to winning ways in the league following a 1-0 victory over Witton Albion thanks to a superb free-kick from Tyrese Sinclair. Jon Macken’s men were most recently knocked out of the Integro League Cup, falling 3-0 to Marine.

October and November’s Club of the Month, Lancaster City failed to take advantage of their extra game last weekend, and remain second in the league only by points difference.

They’ve failed to win in their last three league games, and most recently drew 0-0 at home to Stalybridge Celtic. The Dolly Blues take on Stafford Rangers, who remain in the relegation zone.

Warrington Town hosted Basford United last week and despite a fine strike from Jack Dunn, drew 1-1 with Courey Grantham levelling the scores in the 79th minute.

Paul Carden’s side travel away to Morpeth Town, who recently defeated Grantham Town to climb to 12th in the league table.

Elsewhere in the play-offs, Basford United host Hyde United, who also drew last weekend 1-1 with Gainsborough Trinity.

At the foot of the table, Curtis Woodhouse’s side take on Nantwich Town, who sit ninth in the table.

Jamie Milligan marked his first game in charge at Bamber Bridge with their first away win of the season against Whitby Town.

The Brig also recently welcomed back Blackpool legend Brett Oremerod to join the backroom staff, while also announcing that Richie Allen has returned to the side.

They host Matlock Town, who defeated National League North side Chorley 4-3 on penalties in the FA Trophy to progress to the second round.

Darren Kelly is enjoying life so far by the seaside with Scarborough, recently claiming a 4-1 win at home to Mickleover Sports, with a brace from James Walshaw and goals for Connor Thomson and Michael Coulson. They travel away to Buxton, who sit 20th in the table.

Michael Clegg will recognise most faces this weekend as his new side in Ashton United travel to Atherton Colieries.

Atherton Collieries recently announced the re-signings of captain Danny Lafferty and Gaz Peet until the end of next season.

Moving out of the play-offs, FC United of Manchester return home to Broadhurst Park to take on Grantham Town.

Just outside the play-offs by goals difference, Stalybridge Celtic host Mickleover Sports.

Whitby Town boosted their squad with the signing of local talent Adam Warrilow on dual-registration from Fishburn Park, and he could make his debut against Witton Albion.
