Premier Preview: South Shields six ahead at the top

South Shields go into the weekend six points ahead of next best Lancaster in the BetVictor Northern Premier Division.

They recently defeated Lancaster 2-1 thanks to a double of Jason Gilchrist, while also falling out of the Durham Cup in the quarter-finals, losing 2-1 to Stockton Town.

The Mariners host Witton Albion, who sit 11th in the league table and recently announced that striker Danny Mitchley has extended his loan with the club for a further month.

Following their disappointing result, Lancaster will look to bounce back as they travel to Ashton United, who sit in the relegation zone with 22 points.

Elsewhere in the play-offs, Basford United are on joint-points with Lancaster following their 3-2 victory over Stalybridge, and they host Morpeth Town.

FC United of Manchester will look to continue their fine form of seven consecutive wins in the league as they travel to Buxton, who will have a quick turnover as they face Warrington Town in the league on Tuesday.

The Yellows grabbed a late point in their away fixture to Stafford last weekend, with Josh Amis scoring in injury time for a 2-2 result.

Paul Carden’s side face Whitby Town at Cantilever Park, with the news that Scott Brown has agreed to extend his loan from Harrogate Town.

Scarborough Athletic recently welcomed back Connor Thomson on loan from Gateshead, with boss Darren Kelly confirming a full strength squad for their trip to Stafford Rangers.

“Stafford are fighting for their lives and will be giving it their all to pick up a much-needed three points and it’s up to us to make sure we get on the front foot and dominate the game,” he wrote on the Scarborough News.

“Kian Spence is training on his own as he builds up towards a return to action in a couple of weeks, but other than him we should be at full strength for Saturday.”

Gainsborough Trinity continue their impressive climb up the table, and manager Curtis Woodhouse recently added striker Leon Howarth to the squad ahead of their trip to Atherton Collieries.

Stalybridge Celtic have been busy, releasing Jack O’Leary on loan to Glossop North End, while adding Preston North end academy duo Ethan Walker and Adam O’Reilly ahead of their home fixture against Nantwich Town.

Matlock Town recently departed ways with manager Steve Kittrick by mutual consent, and they travel to Mickleover Sports.

Bamber Bridge host Radcliffe, and Hyde United face Grantham Town.
