Premier Round-up: Gainsborough take control of play-off chase

By James Gordon

A late winner from Alex Simmons gave Gainsborough Trinity a crucial three points in the race for the play-offs.

He struck the winner at Basford United to secure a 1-0 win, Trinity’s fourth straight win under the stewardship of interim boss Liam King.

That win has given them a four point cushion in fifth place in the table after Scarborough Athletic suffered a late loss at home to Stalybridge Celtic.

James Walshaw had given the Seadogs a first half lead, but Celtic turned it around with two goals in the last three minutes from Scott Bakkor and Josh Solomon-Davies, a result that ultimately cost Scarborough boss Steve Kittrick his job. He was sacked on Saturday night, along with assistant Chris Bolder.

Buxton are a point further behind in the play-off race after a 1-0 win at Grantham Town, Liam Hardy scoring the only goal.

Nantwich Town will want to avoid being dragged in to the play-off scape, they sit four points ahead of Gainsborough currently, after dropping two points in an eight-goal thriller at Hednesford Town.

The Pitmen led 2-0 and 3-1, but found themselves trailing 4-3 after Jamie Morgan’s second goal of the game gave the Dabbers the lead for the first time.

But Ben O’Hanlon scored an 86th minute equaliser to stretch Hednesford’s unbeaten run to four under boss Nicky Eaden.

Hyde United’s unlikely hopes of a play-off spot have all but been ended after they suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Lancaster City.

Charlie Bailey gave the Dolly Blues the lead after the hour mark, before Paddy Lane equalised on 70 minutes.

But two minutes later, Lewis Fensome struck the winner for Mark Fell’s men to move them up to 13th in the table.

There were six postponements in the division on Saturday, including the game between North Ferriby United and Bamber Bridge.
