Premier Round-up: Late goal puts Warrington top

By James Gordon

Warrington Town went top of the EVO-STIK League Premier Division thanks to a dramatic late equaliser against Nantwich Town.

The Dabbers had led 3-1 during an extraordinary first half, before Warrington fought back to draw 3-3 thanks to Tony Gray’s goal in the fourth minute of injury time.

Nantwich’s early opener through Sean Cooke’s free-kick was cancelled out by Mark Roberts, and they then missed and scored a penalty, before Daniel Glover made it 3-1.

Josh Amis pulled a goal back before half-time but it looked like their efforts would be in vain until Gray popped up to nudge Warrington a point clear of nearest rivals Farsley Celtic.

They were able to do that thanks to Witton Albion, who beat Farsley 1-0 at Throstle Nest thanks to Rob Hopley’s goal early in the second half.

Witton, who boast the second best defence in the league, are now up to 10th in the table and may have hopes of an unlikely play-off push.

Scarborough Athletic fell out of the play-off places as they were beaten 2-0 at home by lowly Mickleover Sports. Hanani Amantchi scored two in three second half minutes to earn Mickleover their first win in five.

The Seadogs’ slipped enabled a revitalised Gainsborough Trinity to move in to the top five, as they beat doomed North Ferriby United 4-0.

Interim boss Liam King led the Holy Blues to his second win in charge, Ashley Worsfold scoring twice in the first half, new signing Anthony Wilson bagging in the second half and then Damien Reeves adding icing on the cake late on.

Mickleover’s win kept them above Workington, who earned their fourth win in six games by defeating in-form Marine 2-0.

Goals from Bradley Carroll and Samuel Joel mean the Reds are now five points adrift of safety, but with two games in hand on both Mickleover and Stafford.

Stafford sit just outside the drop zone and they needed a late own goal from Dominc Rama to earn a point at Basford United.

Theo Bailey-Jones had given Stafford a half time lead, but Basford turned it around with two goals in four minutes from Jack Thomas and Shaun Harrad.

Hednesford were the third team in the bottom five to win, picking up a superb 2-1 win at Buxton.

Kieran Wells and Courey Grantham put them in control, and they held on for the three points despite a late Thomas Dean strike.

Grantham Town moved themselves further area from the relegation battle with a 2-0 win over Matlock Town, Chris Dawson and new signing Jordan Adebayo-Smith adding yet another goal to his impressive start for the Gingerbreads.

South Shields got themselves back within touching distance of top spot with a 2-0 win away at Bamber Bridge, meaning they were the only team that started the weekend in the top five with a win.

Elsewhere, Tom Pratt scored a brace as Hyde United beat Whitby Town 3-0 and Charlie Bailey scored twice for Lancaster City as they eased their relegation worries with a 2-1 away win at Stalybridge Celtic, who have now lost three on the trot.
