Premier Round-up: Scarborough slip up as Nantwich leave it late

By James Gordon

Nantwich Town moved within a point of EVO-STIK League Premier Division leaders Scarborough Athletic over the weekend.

The Dabbers scored an injury time winner through Steve Jones as they saw off Marine 3-2, who had come from 2-0 down thanks to two quick fire second half goals from James Murray and Steve Irwin.

It looked like being plain sailing for the hosts as they raced in to a two goal lead inside eight minutes of kick-off, Sean Cooke and Joe Mwasile finding the target.

Gainsborough Trinity are up to third after they inflicted only Scarborough’s fourth defeat of the season at the Flamingo Land Stadium.

Second half goals from Simon Russell and Ashley Worsfold earned Trinity a fine victory which outlines their promotion credentials, and they now sit six points behind the leaders with two games in hand - while they have also played only seven at home n 18 games so far.

Making up the play-off places are Farsley Celtic, who were in FA Trophy action at the weekend, and Warrington Town, who left it late to complete a double over Hyde United this season.

Nicky Platt’s free-kick had cancelled out Tony Gray’s opener, but the Yellows found a late break through thanks to Jake Kirby to lift them above Basford United, who were also on FA Trophy duty.

At the bottom, North Ferriby moved level on points with Workington with a 2-1 win at Grantham Town.

After Jake Martindale and Daniel Durkin had exchanged early goals inside the first six minutes, Gary Bradshaw’s second half strike was enough for the Villagers to secure their first win away from home this season.

Mickleover Sports continue to hover above the relegation zone and rescued a point in the last minute at Hednesford Town thanks to Nathan Jarman’s penalty.

The Pitmen had led through Michael Howard and could have jumped to ninth in the table with a win.

Bamber Bridge finally ended their wait for an away win in the EVO-STIK League Premier Division, as they defeat Buxton 1-0. Matthew Dudley’s strike on nine minutes was enough to leave Workington as the only club in the division not to have won away from home in the league this season so far.

There was a thriller in the Midlands as two mid-table sides battled out a 3-3 draw at Marston Road.

It was two each at half time after Tom Thorley and Joe Cuff had scored at either end of the first half for the hosts, with Dale Hopson (penalty) and Lewis Maloney scoring for the visitors in between.

Callum Patton gave Whitby the lead 20 minutes from time before Cuff’s second earned a point.

Matlock Town, Stalybridge Celtic, South Shields and Witton Albion were all off league duty this weekend.
