Premier Round-up: Top four all win

By James Gordon

The top four all won in the EVO-STIK League Premier Division as South Shields maintained their three point lead at the top.

The Mariners survived an early scare against Whitby Town, trailing to a third minute Leon Scott goal, to make it 13 wins from 13 at home in the league this season, and 20 in a row going back to last season.

David Foley equalised seven minutes later, and he would add his second after half time to bring up 60 for the club, though not before Robert Briggs had given them a 2-1 advantage at the break from the penalty spot.

Matthew Tymon pulled Whitby back to 3-2, but centre-half Dillon Morse, the hero in last week’s win over Farsley, bagged his eighth goal of the season and Blair Adams added gloss to the scoreline.

The three teams behind South Shields remain on the same number of points (56), after all winning on Saturday.

Warrington Town moved up to second on goal difference thanks to a 3-0 win over Grantham Town.

The Gingerbreads had won by the same scoreline on their last visit to Cantilever Park in last season’s play-off semi-finals, but they were second best this time.

After a goalless first period, Josh Amis scored twice inside the first five minutes of the second half, and he would go on to complete a perfect hat-trick later on, with Grantham losing Ross Barrows to a red card following two bookable offences.

Farsley, like Warrington, returned to winning ways after three games without one, as they won 3-1 away at Scarborough Athletic, who now sit six points behind their opponents in fifth place.

James Spencer’s brace had Farsley in charge by half time and David Syers’ 66th minute strike had the game safe before Michael Coulson bagged a consolation for the hosts.

After two weekends off, Nantwich Town kept up with the pace thanks to a 1-0 win at Matlock Town.

Joseph Malkin scored the only goal on 72 minutes as Matlock’s slump continues - they are now six games without a win.

Basford United curbed their five game losing streak with a hard-fought 2-1 win at bottom club North Ferriby.

Lewis Carr eased any nerves they might have with a fifth minute opener, but they would go in to the break level after Jordan Windass equalised.

League top scorer Nat Watson restored the lead on the hour with his 17th of the season, heading home from Matt Thornhill’s corner, and the Villagers ended with 10 men as Leon Smith received his second yellow card.

Gainsborough Trinity missed the chance to move up in to the play-off places as they could only draw 1-1 at home to Stafford Rangers.

Ashley Worsfold gave Gainsborough a 40th minute lead with his 13th goal of the season, but Joshua Green equalised from the penalty spot before half-time as Stafford built on last week’s 5-0 win at Grantham with another valuable point away from home.

It wasn’t a good day for any of the sides chasing the play-off places, with Hyde United going down 2-1 at home to Marine.

Danny Mitchley and Samuel Barnes scored either side of Chib Chilaka’s goal to give the Crosby side three points, their fourth win in five games.

Buxton needed a last minute equaliser from Bradley Grayson to earn a point at home to Stalybridge Celtic.

Scott Bakkor had given Celtic the lead on 74 minutes, but were forced to settle for a 1-1 finish and miss the chance to leapfrog their opponents.

At the bottom, a valuable debut goal for hometown boy Paul Dawson following his move from Bamber Bridge gave Lancaster City a 1-0 win over Witton Albion.

Dawson popped up in injury time to secure the three points at The Giant Axe to lift the Dolly Blues out of the play-off places.

With the weather putting paid to their game at Workington, Mickleover Sports now slip in to the bottom three.

There was also a late goal at Bamber Bridge, Alistair Waddecar converting an 88th minute penalty to earn them a point at home to Hednesford Town, who had led through Kieran Wells’ 32 minute strike.
