Preview: FA Cup second qualifying round

By James Gordon

There are 21 ties involving BetVictor Northern Premier clubs in this weekend’s FA Cup second qualifying round.

Just six of those involve NPL sides going head-to-head, with just one - FC United v Warrington Town - featuring two Premier Division clubs.

The Yellows, who were a replay victory over Halifax Town away from reaching the first round proper for the second time in their history last season, travel to Broadhurst Park to face an FC side that is now unbeaten in its last six games.

Regardless of what happens on Saturday, the two will meet at Cantilever Park on Tuesday - either in a replay or in their scheduled league fixture.

Matlock Town suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of South Shields last weekend, but will be looking to progress in the FA Cup when they welcome S/East Division side Kidsgrove Athletic on Saturday.

Kidsgrove were one of four NPL clubs to make it to the fourth qualifying round last season, their best ever run in the competition, before bowing out to Hartlepool United.

They have already seen off divisional rivals Newcastle Town and Cleethorpes Town so far this season, while Matlock saw off their Premier Division counterparts Basford United.

Gladiators boss Steve Kittrick said: “The FA Cup’s everybody’s cup final and if you treat any game lightly you’re likely to get your fingers burnt.

“We treat everyone with the same respect, we’re at home and need to perform. We’ve had Kidsgrove watched and hopefully our game plan will be enough to win the game. It’s all about the day, there can be massive upsets, we’ve just been talking about South Shields, who would have thought they would have gone out to Colne?”

Colne’s reward for upsetting South Shields after a replay in the last round is the visit of Ossett United.

Whoever wins that battle of N/West Division sides will reach the third qualifying round for the first time.

Scarborough Athletic have a tricky trip to Southport, who are the highest ranked club the Seadogs have faced in the competition since the new club was formed in 2007.

Southport are 9th in National League North, while Boro find themselves 17th in the BetVictor Northern Premier after a disappointing start to the season.

Manager John Deacey said: "It is a very tough game, Southport are a great club with a great set-up.

"We are definitely getting there though, the football we played in the first half on Saturday at Nantwich was some of the best we have played this season.

"A draw at their place wouldn't be the worst result in the world because then we could get them back to our place in front of our supporters.

"Whatever happens, we'll be doing our best on the day, which is all we can do."

BetVictor Northern Premier leaders Whitby Town face a potential banana skin away at 1874 Northwich, who have an enviable record in the FA Cup in recent years.

Divisional rivals Marine and Dunston United go head to head in Crosby, having last previously met in the competition in successive years some 15 years ago.

Two NPL clubs go head to head at Hurst Cross, as Premier Division Ashton United welcome N/West Division side Pontefract Collieries.

Colls are playing in the second qualifying round for the first time in their history, while Ashton will be hoping to get a few more wins in the competition to reach the first round proper for the first time in more than 60 years.

Stamford welcome National League North side Boston United for a fourth FA Cup meeting, with Boston having won the previous three, the most recent coming in 2008.

Travelling to National League North opponents are Ramsbottom United, Nantwich Town and Morpeth Town, who visit Gateshead, AFC Telford United and Bradford Park Avenue respectively.

Belper Town will be looking to cause an upset at home to Witton Albion.

Manager Grant Black told the Belper News: “The FA Cup is a special competition and it means even more for the lads because it gives them a chance to pit themselves against higher league opposition.

“Witton are a team doing well in the NPL Premier and it’s a marker to see where they’re at. We’re doing well at the level we’re at but can we step up again on Saturday?

“That’s what we’re looking for - a performance.

“We’re not expected to get anything from the game on Saturday, by people away from the club. In that sense, the pressure’s not on us, so we’ll see how Witton react to that.”

Leek Town travel to United Counties League side Boston Town, hoping to avoid going out of the competition early as they did against UCL side Deeping Rangers last season.

They do have fond memories of facing a team from Boston, having beaten National League North side Boston United back in 2014.

The most common fixture of the second qualifying round sees Stafford Rangers travel to Kidderminster Harriers, for their 12th meeting in the FA Cup.

They haven’t met in the competition for 31 years though, with Stafford looking to cause an upset against step two opposition.

A win for Chasetown, away at National League side Leamington, would set them up for their 100th FA Cup match in the third qualifying round.

Lancaster City, Loughborough Dynamo and Trafford will be out to navigate tricky ties at home to Spennymoor Town, Tamworth and Darlington respectively, while Buxton welcome Corby Town to Silverlands.

Completing the set are Gainsborough Trinity, who go to former NPL club Rushall OIympic, and Sutton Coldfield Town, who face a test at Kettering Town.
