The former Bolton Wanderers, FC United of Manchester, Southport and Skelmersdale United keeper will be one of the biggest names on the EVO-STIK League's official transfer list on Saturday after being snapped up by Fell on Friday.
The experienced 31-year-old kicked off his career at Bolton before enjoying a five year spell at FCUM and a short spell at Skelmersdale before arriving at Victory Park via Southport. Ashton, pictured, was an ever present in the Magpies side which won promotion to National North but sat out the majority of last season with a serious knee injury.
After making a full recovery, he played twice for Kendal over Christmas to regain his match fitness and arrived at the Riverside in time for Saturday’s Lancashire derby in EVO-STIK League North at Colne. Fell moved swiftly to capture the Bolton-based keeper after loan stopper Charlie Albinson was injured last weekend and returned to his parent club Blackburn.
Fell said: “Originally, we spoke to Sam well before Christmas but we needed to plug the gap until he was back to full fitness. Charlie’s loan signing was ideal but with that cut short we needed to bring Sam in earlier - our thanks go to Kendal for allowing his early release.
“Sam is a top goalkeeper and he’s already a good fit for the club. Charlie has returned to Blackburn, he’s got a bright future in the game and I know he’s enjoyed his time here, albeit shorter than expected.”
