Rams journey comes to an end after 1500 miles

Brave Ramsbottom United finally bowed out of the FA Trophy on Tuesday night following an extraordinary run.

Following last week’s remarkable 5-5 home draw against National League side AFC Fylde, the Rams went down 4-1, but not before they had given the coasters another huge scare by taking a first half lead.

Kieran Lugsden headed home Nic Evangelinos’ corner midway through the first half to send the 234 away fans in to raptures.

But they would trail by half time, Danny Rowe equalising with a lofted finish on 35 minutes and then Jordan Tunnicliffe adding a sucker punch on the stroke of half time.

Azerbaijan Under 19s international Serhat Tasdemir gave the home side some breathing space five minutes in to the second half, and having twice thrown away two-goal leads in the first tie, they weren’t about to do that again.

The win was sealed on 67 minutes, Rowe smashing home a fourth to send Fylde through to face Barnet, 2-1 winners over Carshalton Athletic, in the quarter-finals.

It brings to an end a monumental FA Trophy adventure for the Rams, which has taken in 12 games and close to 1500 miles.

The “Yaxley 9” and the “Weymouth 17” who followed the club to their long-distance trips in earlier rounds will no doubt be telling the story of the run for years to come.
