Rylands welcome Italian defender

Warrington Rylands have announced the signing of defender Chiekh Thiam from FC United of Manchester.

Thiam, 21, joined Neil Reynold’s side in August and has made seven appearances.

Born in Verbania, Italy, the young defender started was at Shrewsbury Town before starting his senior career with Manchester Central.

Following a spell at New Mills, Thiam joined Stockport Town during the 2019/20 season, and was named the Manager’s Player of the Season, which put him on the radar at National League side Stockport County.

After impressing in a trial game against Ipswich Town, he was picked up by a Fleetwood Town academy coach, eventually going on to pen a two-year deal with the League One side, featuring in their development squad.

He made his professional debut for the club in a 5-1 victory against Barrow in the EFL Trophy in October 2021.

Thiam will go into contention for Rylands’ next fixture away at Gainsborough Trinity in the Northern Premier League on Saturday.
