Saturday's First Division North action review

By David Watters

There was something of a goal fest in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division North on Saturday with 49 goals in the eleven matches played, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Leaders and strangely now managerless leaders Warrington Town managed only one of those – and that was a Brett Souter own goal after 32 minute. But it was enough to see off fourth-placed Ossett Albion for a 1-0 win at Cantilever Park.

Second-placed Northwich Victoria though hit eight at home to lowly Droylsden to reduce the goal difference with Warrington to just three.

Four goals in the opening 18 minutes from Matty Clarke, Gary Burnett with two and Brian Summerskill set Vics up.

Andy Watson added a fifth seven minutes into the second half before Dominic Smith and Brandon Zibaka pulled two back for the Bloods. But a Josh Amis hat-trick in the final 12 minutes pushed the scoreline up to 8-2.

Only one behind Vics on the goal trail on Saturday were Mossley AFC, who are eighth but only a point behind the top five after hammering still bottom and winless New Mills 7-2 on their own patch.

Similar to at Northwich, the Lilywhites raced into a 4-0 lead inside 17 minutes with David Short, a Jack Pritchard own goal and a brace from Dougie Carroll.

Carroll completed his hat-trick six minutes before the break but the Millers reduced the deficit by two through Danny Douglas-Pringle after 54 minutes and Ricky Anane seven minutes later. However, Tom Pratt after 69 minutes and Andy Keogh 7 minutes later added two more to make it 7-2.

Fifth-placed Spennymoor Town come next in the goalscoring order after hitting visiting Kendal Town for six.

But this one was all-square at 1-1 at the break after a seventh minute Nathan Fisher opener for Moors was cancelled out by Aaron Helliwell 10 minutes later.

Fisher went on to complete his hat-trick shortly after the break and Kallum Griffiths and Shane Henry added two more in the 63rd and 83rd minutes respectively before Fisher scored again to make it 6-1.

Third-placed Glossop North End could `only` muster five at home against second-bottom Harrogate Railway!

Jamie Rainford scored the only goal of the opening half for the Hillmen but then three goals in six minutes midway through the second period from David Young from the spot, Ben Richardson and Astley Mulholland stretched Glossop`s lead.

Dan Barrett netted an 86th minute consolation for the beleaguered visitors before Mulholland made it a nap hand a minute from time.

Seventh-placed Lancaster City were held to a goalless draw at Throstle Nest by in-form Farsley Celtic, while Burscough dropped out of the top five after losing to a 62nd minute Mitch Bryant effort at Trafford.

Witton Albion are only five points off the top five now after a 4-1 win at Irongate against Bamber Bridge.

Falling behind to Jamie Milligan`s ninth minute spot-kick, Albion went on to win, courtesy of Rob Hopley after 20 and 84 minutes and Tom Schofield on 33 and Joe Newton on 76 minutes.

Scarborough Athletic`s woes continue as they were beaten 3-1 at Queensgate by Clitheroe, for whom Sefton Gonzales after 36 minutes and Ross Dent two minutes later had them in command before a James Heywood own goal right on half-time pulled one back for the hosts. Gonzales` second on 65 minutes sealed the Blues` win.

Managerless third-bottom Ossett Town lost 2-1 at Ingfield to fourth-bottom Radcliffe Borough, whose experienced striker Steve Foster bagged a brace on 31 and 90 minutes, sandwiching Isaac Assenso`s 73rd minute reply.
