Saturday's First Division North action review

By David Watters

Mirroring the Premier Division title race, Warrington Town moved ten points clear at the top of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division North table on Saturday after a 3-0 home win over Kendal Town, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

However, second-placed Northwich Victoria, held to a surprise 1-1 home draw by second-bottom Harrogate Railway Athletic, do still possess three games in hand on the Wire.

Ben Deegan had Warrington in front after 17 minutes. But, also eerily to events at Blyth, it wasn`t until the 68th minute when Steve Gillespie`s penalty made the hosts breathe easier. Ged Kinsella added a third with 12 minutes to go.

Vics led through Richard Bennett`s 66th minute effort against Rail, whose Jack Stockdill salvaged a draw in the final minute.

The remaining teams in the top five all won with Spennymoor Town seeing off Witton Albion 3-0 at the Brewery Field with goals from Andrew Stephenson after 35 minutes, Liam Henderson less than a minute later and Stephenson again 10 minutes after the break.

Glossop North End were 2-0 home winners over Brighouse Town where David Young`s seventh minute penalty was added to by a Jamie Rainford effort on the hour-mark.

And now fifth-placed Burscough inflicted defeat number twenty-seven on bottom-markers New Mills, who led through Danny Douglas-Pringle`s 22nd minute goal before Michael Monaghan on 47 minutes and then Paul Williams from the spot on 57 minutes turned it round for the Linnets.

Ossett Albion dropped out of the top five after losing 1-0 at Throstle Nest to Jordan Deacey`s 53rd minute effort for Farsley Celtic.

Albion`s neighbours Ossett Town`s new-look side looked like they were heading for victory at Ingfield against Lancaster City when they led through Alex Peterson`s 12th minute goal and then Danny Frost on 23 minutes.

Jacob Gregory pulled one back for the Dolly Blues eight minutes after the break and Town looked like holding on until Zach Clark pounced for City`s leveller a minute from the end.

Mossley AFC`s play-off hopes suffered a blow as they were beaten 4-1 at Irongate by mid-table Bamber Bridge.

The Lilywhites led through Dave Short`s early second minute goal but a Jamie Milligan brace had Brig in front by the break. Regan Linney on the hour-mark and Ali Waddecar five minutes from time sealed the home side`s win.

Trafford also damaged Clitheroe`s top five hopes with a 2-0 home win, courtesy of Mitch Bryant after 56 minutes and a Chris McDonagh spot-kick in the last minute.

Scarborough Athletic`s miserable run of fourteen games without a win ended on Saturday, thanks to Jamie Forrester`s goal five minutes into the second half at Queensgate against fourth-bottom Radcliffe Borough.

Carlos Edmondson-Rouse bagged a brace for Droylsden at Valerie Park against Prescot Cables but still ended up on the losing side as Lloyd Dean with two and Rob Doran won it for the hosts.
