Saturday's First Division South action review

By David Watters

Shaw Lane Aquaforce ensured that leaders Stafford Rangers will still need to keep their focus after they moved into second place in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division South table on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

And with four games in hand on Rangers, the Barnsley side could yet have a say in the destiny of the title, especially as the leaders dropped two home points to Stocksbridge Park Steels where a crowd of 604 at Marston Road saw Matt Reay give the Sheffield-based visitors a 53rd minute lead. Christian Dacres eventually rescued a draw for the hosts 13 minutes from time.

Shaw Lane edged out a Rugby Town side who had moved to within striking distance of the play-off places, but are now six points behind with games running out.

Rhys Meynall gave Shaw Lane a 13th minute lead that Kevin Thornton cancelled out three minutes later. David Kolodynski then put Valley ahead after 65 minutes but Lee Bennett on 75 minutes and then Marcus Edwards in injury-time, won it for the home side.

Only Basford United of the play-off contenders managed three points on Saturday.

They beat bottom-markers Tividale 4-2 at home to leave the strugglers fifteen points adrift of the safety-mark with only nine games remaining. Fabian Smith gave Basford a 12th minute lead that Chris Sterling cancelled out from the spot after 35 minutes.

Courey Grantham after 41 minutes and Stuart Hendrie after 65 minutes then gave United a 3-1 advantage that Demetri Brown cut on 76 minutes, only for Ruben Wiggins-Thomas to make it safe for Basford eight minutes from time.

Fifth-placed Lincoln United were beaten by the odd goal in seven at Market Drayton Town, who are now back in contention, albeit still six points adrift of their visitors, who had a great start with a Matt Cotton goal inside the opening minute.

Josh Green equalised from the spot after 14 minutes, only for Sean Wright to restore United`s advantage on 24 minutes. Four minutes later and Green scored again to restore parity.

Mike Mackintosh gave the hosts the lead for the first time just past the hour mark with Kallum Smith pulling Lincoln level 10 minutes later, only for Will Whieldon to win it for the Marketmen in stoppage time.

Sixth-placed Chasetown were held to a 2-2 draw by the team immediately below them, Leek Town.

Tim Grice`s 11th minute opener led at The Scholars until Nick Turton levelled on 65 minutes. Stanley Mugisha then put the hosts ahead seven minutes later but Dan Shelley equalised with seven minutes to go.

Second-bottom Loughborough Dynamo made it back-to-back wins to remain within a point of third-bottom Goole AFC, who also won.

Mark Shelton`s 19th minute effort proved enough for Dynamo against Sheffield FC, who still need a point or two themselves.

Goole won their `six-pointer` at Communications Park against fellow strugglers Daventry Town.

Bobby Johnson gave the Vikings a 10th minute lead but Edilson Panzo-Antonio after 48 minutes and Kevin Fitzgerald on 64 minutes, gave Dav a 2-1 lead that Nick Guest from the spot on 65 minutes and Sam Colbear in injury-time, turned round.

Carlton Town also enjoyed an important 3-1 win at Christchurch Meadow to move seven points clear of the bottom two.

Daniel Gordon gave the Nottinghamshire side a 28th minute lead that Josh Rae doubled five minutes after the break. Alex Steadman responded from the spot two minutes later before a 67th minute Anthony Dwyer goal sealed the points for Carlton.

Elsewhere, Harry Clayton after 62 minutes and then James Garlick in stoppage time at the end of the game, scored the goals that earned Newcastle Town victory over Gresley FC at the Lyme Valley Stadium.

Nearby, Kidsgrove Athletic saw off Spalding United by the same scoreline and ironically, the goals from Anthony Malbon and Joe Woolley came at virtually the same time as at neighbouring Newcastle!
