Saturday's First South action review

By David Watters

Shaw Lane AFC remain three points clear at the top of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's Division One South table after defeating Chasetown 2-0, writes Pitchero's Ryan Allen.

Kieran Lugsden and Alex Byrne both scored in the second half of Saturday's win which leaves Craig Elliott’s team holding the advantage in the quest for promotion to the EVO-STIK NPL's Premier division.

Witton Albion are the side keeping the pressure up and they got back to winning ways after losing to the Ducks during mid-week with a 4-1 victory against Stamford as they scored two goals in each half.

Third place Spalding United were defeated 1-0 by Bedworth United, a late Kamil Ciolek strike proving to be the difference between the sides.

Stocksbridge Park Steels made it seven wins in a row after they defeated Market Drayton Town 4-1, Chris Hilton’s team moving up to fourth in the table.

AFC Rushden and Diamonds occupy the last play-off place after they beat Newcastle Town 1-0, Liam Dolman grabbing the winner after 64 minutes.

Four first-half goals shared evenly between Leek Town and Lincoln United hampered both sides bids to reach the play-off places. Town are all but out of the running after dropping six points off the pace, while Lincoln are two points off fifth.

Elsewhere two early strikes set Gresley on their way to all three points away at Rugby Town, Reece Morris and Matt Melbourne scored within seven minutes. Although Town gave themselves hope thanks to a Levi Rowley penalty it finished 2-1.

Belper Town leapfrogged Kidsgrove Athletic after beating them 3-1, Ruben Wiggins-Thomas grabbing two of the goals.

And on Friday night Romulus and Sheffield FC played out a 1-1 draw. James Gregory had given the world’s oldest football club the lead before the hosts equalised in the second half with a Liam Hailey effort.
