Second club to mark RAF centenary

Market Drayton Town's fans, players and officials are looking forward to becoming the second EVO-STIK League club to help the Royal Air Force celebrate the service's centenary.

After EVO-STIK League Premier Division Halesowen Town were invited to RAF Cosford in Shropshire in December to play the RAF senior representative team, Martyn Davies and his EVO-STIK League South side are heading to the Royal Air Force Stadium on Tuesday 6 February with fans invited to see the 7.45pm kick-off for free.

Market Drayton Town general club secretary Rod Pope said the club were "honoured" on Tuesday to receive official confirmation of the fixture, the latest in a series of matches the RAF are playing against clubs all over the world this year to mark their centenary.

Formed towards the end of the First World War on 1 April 1918 following the the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS), the RAF is the oldest independent air force in the world.

Since its formation, the RAF has played a significant role in British military history, most memorably during the Second World War when it paved the way for the eventual defeat of Hitler's Germany by winning the Battle of Britain in 1940.
