Skipper's season is over after break

Basford United wished skipper Jake Sheridan a speedy recovery on Saturday night after the former Notts County star suffered a season-ending leg break in the FA Trophy at EVO-STIK Northern Premier League rivals Stamford.

The club's 30-year-old talisman was hurt in the run-up to half-time of the preliminary round tie with the EVO-STIK NPL First Division South clubs level at 0-0, pictured.

The fixture at the Zeeco Stadium stadium was subsequently suspended for an hour and 10 minutes while the defender and midfielder was treated on the pitch by the medics of both sides before being taken by ambulance to Peterborough Hospital.

After the players and officials of both clubs agreed to resume play, the Daniels scored the only goal of the tie soon after the restart, Grant Ryan netting three minutes before the break to complete a miserable day for manager Martin Carruthers and his squad.

Sheridan, who went on to play for Tamworth, Eastwood Town, Lincoln City, Alfreton and Boston United, is the third United player to suffer a season-ending injury since the start of the season after defender Rob Darkin and former Ilkeston forward Rob Duffy were both ruled out.

A spokesman for the Greenwich Avenue club said: "It took a lot of courage to decide to resume this game rather than take an abandonment but they did so with Jake in their minds. Our thoughts are totally with Jake and the club wish him a speedy recovery.

"With United already losing Rob Darkin and Rob Duffy to season ending injuries then football pales into significance to the well being of these three individuals."
