South Shields announce formation of supporters board

Northern Premier League club South Shields have announced plans for a supporter’s board.

The supporter’s group will enable official club officials to converse with the supporters to discuss strategic options and make decisions that will affect the direction of the club.

A statement on South Shields official site reads: "A football club is nothing without its supporters and we are the first to recognise how fortunate we are to have such loyal, committed and supportive people making up our fanbase."

The Mariners are actively looking for supporters to join the board and have a criteria list that they wish to recruit from.

According to South Shields, the criteria includes:

  • An online supporters group
  • A Disabled supporter
  • A supporter that is a member of the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Female supporter (under the age of 18)
  • Male supporter (under the age of 18)
  • Female supporter (aged 19-30)
  • Male supporter (aged 19-30)
  • Female supporter (aged 31-64)
  • Male supporter (aged 31-64)
  • Female supporter (aged over 65)
  • Male supporter (aged over 65)
  • A family which regularly attends together
  • Owner of a local business
  • A representative from SSFC Foundation
  • A representative from SSFC Academy

South Shields director, Paul Macpherson, has also demonstrated the importance of the fans: "We absolutely want the fans to play a part.

"I know Geoff’s ambition is to have much greater fan ownership of the club in the future.

"The regular 2,000 we get at 1st cloud arena every other week is phenomenal. I can’t speak highly enough of our fanbase – it is second to none.

"We are a big town, and our aim and mission, collectively, has to be to sell the club to the other 70-odd thousand people who live in the town.

"Without too much of a push we can absolutely add another 500 to the gate on a regular basis, which actually makes a massive difference, and really pushes us forward to achieving the goal of self-sustainability."

Having recently appointed Kevin Phillips as boss, the club are currently mounting a promotion charge into the National League North.
