Special tribute as result stands

EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Brighouse Town have sealed another bond with Shaw Lane after agreeing that their Integro Sport League Cup opponents should go through to the next round following the tragic death of Danny Wilkinson.

Town's "agreement and understanding" for the league's decision that the result from the abandoned first round tie should stand in the light of the tragedy was officially recorded this week in the minutes from Sunday's September board meeting of the EVO-STIK NPL.

Brighouse Town are already paying a special tribute to the Ducks defender who sadly passed away soon after the game was abandoned on Monday 12 September with his side leading 2-0 at St Giles Road. Before taking on Hyde United last Monday night, they unveiled a new warm-up kit featuring his name and number which they will run out for action in until the end of the season.

Fans at the 2-0 win for Brighouse also held a minute's applause for the former Hull City, North Ferriby United, Scarborough Athletic, Harrogate Town, Goole Town and Rushall Olympic player who passed away despite the best efforts of medics from both clubs and the emergency services to treat him using Town's defibrillator and administering CPR after he collapsed.

An underlying heart condition - Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (AVRC) - was later blamed for death of the 24-year-old. Brighouse also held a bucket collection to add to the £8,000 that has currently been donated to The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation, set up in his name to raise £50,000 to screen more young players for heart problems and buy life-saving defibrillators for clubs.

A minute's silence was observed by the EVO-STIK NPL's clubs at all fixtures on the Saturday after the player's death. In front of Daniel's parents at Shaw Lane, officials renamed a stand in his honour and officially retired his number five shirt before kicking off against Romulus.

Clubs from the North West Counties Football League to the Premier League also remembered the player with supporters at Hull City versus Arsenal asked to hold a minute's applause for the former Tigers youth team star, the tribute at the KCOM stadium later featuring on Saturday's edition of Match of the Day.
