Steels mourn president's passing

EVO-STIK League Stocksbridge Park Steels are mourning the passing of their popular president Jack Newton.

A former Chesterfield and Huddersfield goalkeeper, the EVO-STIK League South club's president passed away on Wednesday at the age of 94 after a short illness.

A member of the Sheffield club's committee since the mid 1980s, the widower played for Stocksbridge Works FC before the club's merger with Oxley Park FC in 1986 to form Stocksbridge Park Steels. In an issue of Football Punk magazine, the proud Steels stalwart once described the newly former club as the "the best in Yorkshire."

Officials at Bracken Moor paid tribute to their late president on Thursday in a statement announcing his passing. The club said: "It was with great sadness that we learnt on Wednesday morning of the passing of our much loved president Jack Newton after a short illness. Jack, who was 94, was a former Chesterfield and Huddersfield goalkeeper. He played for Stocksbridge Works and has been a member of the club committee since the mid 1980’s.

"Of course our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time and we will commemorate his passing in the appropriate manner at the start of a game when his family are available to attend."
