Successor to Davies is on the way

Market Drayton Town expect to have a new manager at the helm within days after ending the reign of Martyn Davies.

Davies, pictured, was relieved of his duties on Wednesday after two seasons in the hot-seat following his side's 2-1 defeat at Alvechurch in EVO-STIK League South on Tuesday night. His departure after a fifth league reverse of the season leaves his side in 16th spot and ends an 18 year association with the Shropshire club.

Market Drayton Town chairman Ben Cockram paid tribute to Davies and confirmed that the hunt for his successor at the Greenfields Sports Ground was well underway with a trip to Chasetown next up on Saturday in the preliminary round of the Buildbase FA Trophy.

Davies guided the club to a record 11th place finish last term and Cockram said: “I am very grateful for the hard work that Martyn has put into his management and coaching roles at the club and wish him the very best with his management career going forward.

"He has been a loyal servant to the club for the past 18 years and we are by no means closing the door on him here at Greenfields. We will always welcome him with open arms at the club and we remain incredibly appreciative of the fantastic service he has given us over the years.”

Explaining the decision to part company, he added: "This has not been a decision we have taken lightly. We have had several meetings on how we can move the club forward. We sat down, discussed our options, and came to a decision that we need to freshen things up here by looking for a new management team.

"Martyn has done an excellent job over the last couple of seasons but we feel he's taken us as far as he can and the Board unanimously agreed that a change in direction was needed. We have been very busy examining several impressive candidates for his successor and we will announce our new first team manager soon.”
