Thursday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

There were two crucial games in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's Premier Division on Thursday night, both involving the bottom end of the table, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

It should have been three games but bottom-markers Ramsbottom United suffered another home postponement against Matlock Town.

At Llanelian Road, second-bottom Colwyn Bay entertained a Mickleover Sports side sitting a place and two points above the drop zone at the start of play. And the Derbyshire outfit made the long trek back with all three points and a crucial five-point advantage over fourth-bottom Whitby Town.

Bay made a great start to the game and were a goal up after just four minutes when joint caretaker boss Luke Denson crossed for Carl Lamb to score. They were further boosted when Craig Ellison saved a 17th minute penalty from Mickleover’s Zeph Thomas following a rash tackle in the box.

But the equaliser the visitors had been threatening came on 66 minutes through Jake Green. And seven minutes later the visitors were in front when a long ball forward wasn`t cleared properly by Ellison and Andy Dales hit a first-time effort from 40 yards past the keeper and into the net.

Defeat leaves Bay ten points adrift of the safety zone with just seven games left.

At Silverlands, mid-table Buxton entertained a Marine AFC side who began the match just three points above the relegation places.

The Mariners have made a habit of escaping the drop late in recent seasons, and a fourth game unbeaten looks as though they could well do the same again this term. But they left it mighty late!

The visitors broke the deadlock six minutes into the second half, courtesy of Danny Mitchley. But two goals in four minutes from Ashley Worsfold, stating in the 64th minute, turned the game in the Bucks` favour.

A minute from the end of normal time though the Mariners were given a lifeline by the award of a penalty which Andy Owens coolly converted. A point would have been a decent outcome but less than a minute later the visitors were awarded another spot-kick and Owens kept his nerve to win the game for his side and lift them to eighteenth in the table.
