The strike partner of England striker Jamie Vardy when they were together at Stocksbridge Park Steels, Powell, pictured, was unveiled on Monday as as the successor to Paul Quinn after he left at the end of last season after almost six years at the helm.
Quinn guided the West Yorkshire club to a ninth placed finish in EVO-STIK NPL First Division North in April and Powell has been tasked with pushing for promotion when the 2017-18 campaign kicks off at St Giles Road in August.
A UEFA A licenced coach, Powell won the FA Trophy with Grays Athletic during a playing career that took in Derry City and HJK Helsinki before he returned to England to score an astonishing 73 goals for Retford in one season. Now 37, Powell also turned out in Non-League for a host of others clubs including Denaby United, Havant & Waterlooville, North Ferriby United, Stafford Rangers, Weymouth and Worksop Town.
After moving into coaching with the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA, he was with Rotherham United’s Academy before joining Harrogate Town 18 months ago as assistant to Simon Weaver.
With Harrogate Town going full-time next season, Powell, who works for Sheffield Council, agreed to take charge after meeting with Brighouse Town chairman Charlie Tolley. Powell is expected to meet the club's players for the first time tonight (Tuesday).
