Tuesday's First Division North action review

By David Watters

Spennymoor Town and Clitheroe both boosted their top five challenge in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division South on Tuesday night with victories, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Moors are virtually assured of a top five finish after winning 1-0 at Valerie Park, thanks to a 37th minute Mark Anderson effort, but are thirteen points behind leaders Warrington Town with now just one game in hand.

Clitheroe returned to fifth spot after beating third-placed Glossop North End 3-0 at Shawbridge in front of a crowd of 306.

Mike Hampson gave the Blues an early seventh minute lead that Scott Harries doubled after 35 minutes. Sefton Gonzales added a third with five minutes of the first half remaining.

Long-time leaders and fourth-placed Northwich Victoria now only have a four-point cushion above sixth-placed Burscough after losing to a 73rd minute Chris Marlow goal at mid-table Bamber Bridge.

At the other end of the table, Ossett Town ensured bottom-markers New Mills remain win-less after a 2-0 away win, moving them five points clear of the bottom two.

Simon Rogers after 15 minutes and Alex Peterson in the 56th minute were Town marksmen.

Ossett also closed the gap on the team immediately above them, Radcliffe Borough, who were beaten 3-0 at Stainton Park by Trafford, for whom Liam Davies after 13 minutes, Chris McDonagh 10 minutes later and Chris Palmer were on the mark.

Witton Albion beat Farsley Celtic 2-1 at Wincham Park in the evening`s other game, coming back from being a 36th minute Leon Osborne goal down to win, courtesy of Jeff King three minutes into the second half and then a 76th minute penalty converted by Danny Andrews.
