Tuesday's First Division South action review

By David Watters

With the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division South title race all but over given Stafford Rangers` thirteen-point lead, Tuesday night's spotlight was on the battle for play-off places, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Shaw Lane Aquaforce missed the chance to go second when they were held to a 1-1 derby draw at Sheffield FC, leading through Gavin Allott`s 15th minute opener until five minutes from time before Jordan Turner popped up with Club`s leveller.

Fifth met fourth at Ashby Avenue and it was hosts Lincoln United who ran out winners against Basford United, courtesy of a last-minute Sean Wright effort. The victory leaves Lincoln four points above sixth-placed Chasetown and five behind Basford.

Rugby Town moved into eighth place, seven points behind Lincoln, after they won 3-1 at The Moat against mid-table Gresley FC.

Kevin Thornton bagged a brace for Valley after seven minutes and then 35 minutes from the penalty spot. A Matt Roome own goal made the points safe for the visitors on 65 minutes, although the Moatmen did manage a 78th minute reply from Ryan King.

Romulus` chances though have probably gone now as they are ten points adrift of the top five following a 2-0 defeat at Christchurch Meadow by Belper Town.

Jonny Williams after 27 minutes and Bradley Wells three minutes before the break, were on target for the Nailers.

Newcastle Town recorded a 2-0 win at the Lyme Valley Stadium against Stocksbridge Park Steels in Tuesday`s other game – Neville Thompson after six minutes and James Garlick on the half-hour mark, the Castle`s men on the mark.
