Tuesday's First Division South action review

By David Watters

Shaw Lane Aquaforce made the title race in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division South far from the foregone conclusion it seemed a little while back with a big win on Tuesday night, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

It had appeared that Stafford Rangers would coast to the championship, having held a formidable lead for many weeks.

Indeed, they still head the table by ten points but Tuesday`s 3-1 home win for Shaw Lane over play-off chasing Leek Town means that if they win their games in hand, they will be just a point behind Rangers.

And with the busy Easter period coming up, the table could have a very different look about it in a couple of weeks` time.

Lee Bennett gave Shaw Lane a good start with the opening goal after nine minutes. Jonathan Wafula added a second four minutes later and then a third with just 35 minutes gone on the clock.

Leek managed to re-group and indeed `won` the second half with a last-minute Tim Grice effort.

Romulus gave themselves an outside chance of making the top five with a 4-1 win at The Moat against mid-table Gresley FC.

Two goals in a minute, starting with Malachi Farquharson in the 10th minute and then Charisma Agbonlahor, gave the Roms a great start.

Jack Langston reduced the arrears on the hour-mark but Luke Keen on 73 minutes and Hedilberto Vilela Santos three minutes later, sealed the visitors` win.

Bottom-markers Tividale won for only the third time this season by beating Newcastle Town 5-3 at home but they are still twelve points adrift of the safety-mark with only eight games to go.

Desean Martin and Chris Sterling gave the home side the boost of two goals in the opening 23 minutes. James Askey replied two minutes later, only for Demitri Brown to make it 3-1 in the 54th minute.

A Conor Hughes own goal three minutes later stretched that to 4-1 before Jordan Cole pulled one back for Castle from the spot on the hour-mark. Harry Clayton then added a third eight minutes later, only for Sterling to notch his second and Tivi`s fifth in stoppage time.
