Tuesday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Darlington 1883 are now favourites to take the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's Premier Division title after a 5-0 hammering of FA Trophy semi-finalists Nantwich Town on Tuesday night, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The victory at the Weaver Stadium lifted the Quakers to within a point of leaders Blyth Spartans with two games in hand and increased their goal difference to 13 above their North East rivals.

Darlington stretched their winning run to six games in emphatic style by blowing away a naturally disappointed Dabbers outfit still suffering from a Trophy hangover and without several key players.

But the visitors were outstanding in front of a crowd of 512, taking the lead on the half-hour mark through Nathan Cartman and then going into the break two-up, courtesy of a 42nd minute Tom Portas effort.

Terry Galbraith then bagged a brace in the 50th minute from the penalty spot and then on 52 minutes before Graeme Armstrong completed the rout against a tiring host side with 18 minutes to go.

Workington AFC improved their play-off hopes by moving five points clear of sixth-placed Stourbridge after a 2-1 win at a third-bottom Mickleover Sports outfit who are now three points adrift of the safety-mark.

The Derbyshire side started well, however, when former Burton Albion favourite John McGrath gave them a 22nd minute lead.

But that lasted barely a minute as Scott Allison swiftly equalised. And it was Allison who grabbed the Reds` winner with 12 minutes left to play.

Tuesday's three other matches all had huge significance at the bottom end of the table.

Bottom-markers Ramsbottom United can still mathematically haul themselves out of the bottom four after their 1-1 draw at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium against fellow strugglers Marine AFC, but it would be a monumental achievement if they do.

Aaron Smith gave Rammy a 16th minute lead that Lewis Codling cancelled out seven minutes later, and that`s how it ended, leaving the Mariners three points above the drop zone and the hosts fifteen points from safety with nine games to go.

Although Rammy look doomed, second-bottom Colwyn Bay gave themselves a massive boost with a 3-2 Llanelian Road victory over mid-table Buxton.

And they had to come back from being a 54th minute Bradley Barraclough goal down to win, with Adam Morgan equalising 12 minutes later, only for Greg Young to restore the Bucks lead seven minutes after that.

But a quickfire vital brace from Carl Lamb after 80 and 81 minutes sealed a big win for Bay, who are now six points behind the fifth-bottom side.

And that side is Whitby Town, who earned themselves a useful point from a goalless draw at Stormy Corner against Skelmersdale United.
