Tuesday's South Division action review

By David Watters

Alvechurch moved into second place in EVO-STIK League South on Tuesday night after ending Cleethorpes Town's unbeaten league run of eleven at Lye Meadow, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The hosts, looking to bounce back after a surprise home reverse in their last outing against Spalding United, finally broke the deadlock in the 70th minute when a corner from Tom Turton was headed home by Josh March in the six-yard box.

The focus of attention in the evening's other two games was at the other end of the table where Sheffield FC move five points clear of bottom side Romulus after a 2-1 Coach & Horses win against Carlton Town, with whom they are now level on 33 points.

Hero of the day for Club was Waide Fairhurst – the former Macclesfield Town striker bagging a brace in the seventh and 40th minutes to ensure that Ben Hutchinson`s 63rd minute reply was only a consolation.

Third-bottom Gresley FC picked up a point from a 1-1 draw at The Moat with Newcastle Town.

It had looked as though Aaron Bott`s goal just after half-time for Castle was going to be the winner until Ollie Bassett popped up with the Moatmen`s leveller in stoppage time to move them three points ahead of Roms.
