Tulips mourn their Mr Spalding

EVO-STIK League Spalding United are mourning the passing of vice-president Jack Goddard.

Pictured with his daughter Carol during the EVO-STIK League South club's United Counties-winning championship season of 2013-14, the lifelong home and away fan had been involved with the Tulips since he was a boy for nine decades before passing away this weekend aged 94.

The Tulips paid tribute to the much-love official and father-of-two they affectionately dubbed Mr Spalding United in a statement sending the club's condolences to his family and friends.

The club said: “Thoughts, prayers and sympathies from everyone in Tulipsville go out to Jack's daughter Carol, son Chris and all of Jack's family and many friends at this poignant time.

"A veritable fixture at Tulips matches, both home and away, for more years than anyone seems able to remember, it will take some adjustment getting used to not seeing 94 years-young Jack again within the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field and Tulips' Social Club whenever a matchday rolls around.

"Jack loved his football and adored his Tulips and was in attendance for our home season opener versus Corby Town as recently as 15th August. His passing came after a short illness. Better qualified scribes than I will, we hope, want to share their memories of the 'Grand Old Fellow' of Spalding United FC and we welcome any stories, anecdotes people would like to share about Jack's long association with the club via the response page here or via social media.

“Back in the day Jack could be found tending 'his pitch' at the Sir Halley Stewart, often going to extraordinary lengths to ensure that 'his boys' had the best playing surface possible to entertain him and all Tulips fans in attendance. His knowledge of past seasons, staff, players, grounds and opponents was immense and his mind razor-sharp to the end in spite of his advancing years."

The club added: "Details of when and where Jack's funeral will take place will follow in due course; for now, thank you and safe passage, old friend - your place in Tulips' folklore is assured ..."
