Two more through the door at Workington

Workington AFC have brought in former Cleator Moor Celtic captain Tom Mahone and ex-Atherton Collieries midfielder James Hooper.

Mahone impressed during pre-season and has done enough to secure a deal with the club ahead of the forthcoming campaign.

On joining Danny Grainger’s side, he said: “I’m delighted to sign for the Reds. I’m looking forward to the season starting and can’t wait to get going."

The second new addition sees former Carlisle United, Salford City and Chorley attacking midfielder James Hooper make the move to Borough Park.

He is no stranger to new coach Grainger, having played alongside him earlier in his career.

“Obviously knowing the gaffer and how he wants to play is a massive pull for me,” Hooper said. “I know he has very high standards and the players buy into it.

“I can see there is real quality in the squad and competition in every position, which you need if you want to be successful.

“I’m excited to be part of the squad and the club, and want to help in our target of trying to get promoted.”

Reds manager Danny Grainger added: “I know his quality on the ball after sharing a dressing room with him, and I’m sure he will bring that quality to the club as well.

“I know what type of player he is and also what type of person he is. He is a winner that will demand high standards from not only himself but everyone around him.

“Once we get him up to the fitness levels we expect, I’m confident he will have a big impact on us this season.”
