Unbeaten Leek Go Second

Leek Town update

Unbeaten Leek Town shot to second place in the league table after completing a smash and grab job at Grantham Town on Saturday.

A brace from Richard Minor set Blues on their way and although the Gingerbreads pulled on back on the hour, a third breakaway effort from Devon Gibson secured the points.

Leek have the same points and goal difference as newcomers New Mills who currently top the division based on goals scored.

Blues are at home on Tuesday 7.45pm and will be looking to secure their league position against free-scoring Sutton Coldfield Town who sit 4th in the table with six points from three games.

Johnson blow for Blues
New Leek Town defender Aden Johnson is expected to be out of action for some considerable time after breaking his collar bone in the opening game of the season at home to Carlton.

Johnson was an hour into his debut for Blues when he was forced out of the action as Leek were defending their slender 1-goal lead.

The 19-year old full back impressed in pre-season training and fixtures and was signed on the eve of the season after being released by Burton Albion.

Other player news
Former Kidsgrove Athletic midfielder Tim Sanders made his debut for Blues in the midweek draw at Hucknall Town when he came on as a 68th minute substitute for Michael Morton.

But Sanders has yet to make his full debut after ironically replacing the injured Morton five minutes into the second half at Grantham on Saturday.

Striker Jamie McCarthy returned from holiday in time to make the trip to Grantham on Saturday but was an unused substitute after winning a seat on the bench as was full back Ben Nixon.

However, midfielder Sean Turner and winger Oliver Edwards were the unlucky ones not to get a shirt for the game at Grantham on Saturday and chose not to travel with the squad.

Director of Football Neil Baker still thinks both have a roll to play at Harrison Park if they want to and chances will come their way.

Neither was involved on Saturday but they may well be keeping match fit at the Old Boys whilst Ricky Bridge will get chances and still has a part to play after also losing out on a shirt at Grantham.

Meanwhile, veteran midfielder Wayne Corden was loaned out to local side Ball Haye Green to test out his recovery from a hamstring injury that has sidelined him since the opening game of the season.

FA Cup
Leek Town will have to wait to find out who their opponents will be in the FA Cup Preliminary Round after Malvern Town and Causeway United drew 0-0 in their extra-preliminary round tie on Sunday.

The replay will take place at Boldmere St Michaels on Wednesday 7.45pm and Blues will face the winners away on Saturday 3 September 3.00pm.
