Vaughan is back as new boss

Garry Vaughan is returning to the touchlines of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League as the new manager of Ramsbottom United.

The former Trafford manager was named on Sunday night as the successor to Jon Robinson following an interview with the club's committee and chairman Harry Williams.

Rammy legend Robinson quit last month after taking over last season from Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley following their switch to Salford City.

In a club statement, officials also announced the appointment of Wayne Goodison, his former number two at Trafford, in a similar role at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium.

Caretaker manager Phil Edghill is also staying on with more than two thirds of the season to go as part of a three man management team to preserve the club's Premier Division status.

Vaughan is well-known in North West football having completed 16 years with league rivals Trafford FC, ten as a player and six as manager taking the Manchester club from the North West Counties Football League into the top flight of EVO-STIK NPL.

After working most recently with FC United of Manchester's youngsters, Vaughan is looking forward to the challenge at the rock-bottom Rams.

He said: “It’s brilliant to be back in football management. For the last three or four months I’ve felt it was time to return and I’m absolutely delighted that Ramsbottom United have given me the opportunity.

"It’s quite a challenge, but I’m looking forward to taking the club forward and maintaining our position in this league."

Rams chairman Harry Williams is delighted with the appointment and backed Vaughan to be a success ahead of his first game back at the helm, Mickleover Sports at home on Saturday.

Williams said: “It was a unanimous decision, and we look forward to working with Garry who we are sure will do a fine job in stabilising the team and taking the club forward.”

Edghill is ready to play his part in the trio's bid to lead the club to safety despite missing out on the top job.

He added: “At this stage in my career, it is probably the best thing, although I did have designs on the management position myself. It will be good to learn from the new manager and over the last couple of weeks, 'Goody' and myself have worked well together, so I can see the three of us gelling and taking the club forward.”
