Veteran striker set to lead the line at newcomers

Basford United manager Martin Carruthers has added two more quality additions to his squad ahead of the Saturday's big kick off to the new EVO-STIK Northern Premier League.

Former Nottingham Forest, Chesterfield, Shepshed Dynamo, Carlton Town, Retford United, Belper Town and Ilkeston FC striker Daryll Thomas and experienced midfielder Jermaine Hollis signed on the dotted line after last Saturday’s final pre-season friendly against Brighouse Town.

Long-term target Thomas, 29, and Hollis, 28, are both expected to feature on Saturday when the EVO-STIK NPL newcomers head to Gresley FC in First Division South.

Hollis has returned to Greenwich Avenue two years after the central midfielder left for Basford's former Midland League rivals Long Eaton United. He has also turned out for a number of other clubs in the area including Rainworth, Eastwood Town, Carlton and Hucknall Town.

A club spokesnman said: A Long-term target Thomas is a striker proven at Evo-Stik level and will add very good options for manager Martin Carruthers, increasing competition up-front.

"Having pushed Basford all the way last season, Hollis was a key player for Long Eaton and it’s a great coup for the club too be able to bring him back to Greenwich Avenue."

The double signing follows the weekend return of winger Blair Anderson from League One Crawley Town.

The talented winger earned a move into the Football League last season after being signed by Dean Saunders but had been left in limbo after his summer departure and replacement by Mark Yates.

* Basford United are running a coach for supporters to Gresley's Moatside at the weekend. Tickets for the coach which leaves at 12.15pm are priced at £5.
