Walker rolls off production line

The production line of emerging talent at Ilkeston FC was rolling again on Wednesday night with Lewis Walker leaving the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League for Championship Derby County.

The Rams, riding high in the table and pushing for automatic promotion to the Premier League, beat off several top flight clubs to secure the services of 17-year-old midfielder, pictured.

Walker’s move comes less than a month after academy teammate Rhys Dolan switched to League One Barnsley to add to the growing list of academy stars who've made it to the professional game, Che Adams to Sheffield United, Akil Wright and Ash Hunter at Fleetwood Town and Rai Simons with Chesterfield.

Walker made his mark at the New Manor Ground during this season’s superb run to the third round proper of the FA Youth Cup and an heroic 3-2 exit at the hands of Newcastle United's youngsters before Christmas. In his five appearances he scored six goals, two of them coming against Shrewsbury Town in the second round.

First called up in October to Andy Watson’s first-team squad after his showing in the FA Youth Cup, the teenager made his debut as a second half substitute in a 2-1 home win over Grantham Town and his full debut in the 1-1 draw with Stocksbridge Park Steels in the FA Trophy's second qualifying round in November. In total, Walker made six first-team appearances, four as a substitute, and scored one goal.

A Robins spokesman said: "Everyone at the New Manor Ground wishes Lewis all the very best for his future."
