Warrington Town announce first summer signings

Warrington Town have confirmed the signing of former Altrincham goalkeeper Tony Thompson and experienced defender Tom Hannigan.

Thompson made 39 appearances in all competitions for the Robins last season as they secured a 14th-placed finish in the Vanarama National League.

The 27-year-old is a former team-mate of Yellows midfielder Sean Williams, and will add experience from higher up the football pyramid as manager Mark Beesley looks to assemble a squad capable of challenging for promotion again in 2022/23.

He will replace former Yellows keeper Dan Atherton, who recently left the club to pursue an opportunity in the Welsh Premier League.

“The club just missed out last year, and with the additions that they’re making, I don’t see why we can’t push on this season," he told the club’s official website.

“I know all about the club. I’ve watched the results for the past two or three seasons because I’ve got a lot of friends who have come here and played.

“I’ve had a really good couple of seasons in the National League with my shot-stopping and coming for crosses.

“I’ve got quite a presence, and I think my distribution can really help us this season.”

Joining him at Cantilever Park is experienced centre-back Tom Hannigan.

The 33-year-old has spent several seasons at Vanarama National League side Altrincham, where he made well in excess of 150 appearances for the club.

Hannigan began his career with Tranmere Rovers before playing for Vauxhall Motors and AFC Fylde, prior to his move to Altrincham in May 2016.

His arrival will help to fill the gap following captain Mark Roberts’ decision to hang up his boots last month.

“It feels great to sign for a well-respected club, with good people in charge,” he said.

“I’ve kept track of how Warrington have been doing for a few years, and they’ve been knocking on the promotion door for a number of seasons.

“A few players have moved on but the core of the squad is still here.

“I’m aware of the quality in the squad, and with a couple more additions there’s no reason why we can’t make that final step.”

The Yellows have also confirmed that forward Isaac Buckley-Ricketts has made a permanent move to the club following a successful loan spell last season.

The 24-year-old grabbed an assist within moments of his debut against Morpeth Town in February, before scoring his first goal for the club against Stafford Rangers in April.

The former Southport winger made 11 appearances in total.
