Welsh steps up as new manager

The former Blackpool, Carlisle United, Stockport County, Scunthorpe United, Sunderland and Yeovil Town star, pictured, was named on Monday as the successor to Dave Hawley three days after his departure from the Unicorns on Friday.

The 34-year-old stepped up into the hot-seat at Dimple Wells three months after his appointment alongside Hawley as head coach and will take the helm for the first time on Saturday when the Unicorns host Tadcaster Albion in EVO-STIK League North with his new charges second from bottom and five points from safety.

Welsh, who also spent a season in the MLS with Toronto before returning to the UK to play for FCUM in 2014 and then Farsley Celtic for two seasons until 2016, has also succeeded Hawley as the head of the club's Unita Academy and is now looking to appoint his own number two.

UEFA A coach Hawley was an elite youth development coach at Huddersfield Town for 13 years before leaving the then Premier League new boys in 2016 and succeeding Richard Tracey at the West Yorkshire club in September.
