West Round-up: Atherton Colls are champions

By James Gordon

Atherton Collieries are EVO-STIK League West Division champions after a goalless draw against Trafford.

That point, coupled with Radcliffe’s 0-0 draw at home to Ramsbottom United, mean Colls have unassailable four point lead going in to the final day and secures their automatic promotion to the Premier Division.

Radcliffe must settle for a play-off place, while Ramsbottom still need a result to secure their place.

Leek Town are sandwiched between those two, following a 1-1 draw against Chasetown on Monday.

The weekend’s biggest losers were Runcorn Linnets, who slipped out of the play-off places for the first time since August with a 2-0 home defeat against local rivals Widnes.

That enabled Colne to move in to fifth place with a 3-0 win at home to Clitheroe.

Elsewhere, Prescot Cables are out of the play-off running but battered bottom placed Skelmersdale United 5-0, Chris Almond scoring a brace.

Kendal were also handsomely beaten, 4-1 at home by Droylsden, but they are set to be reprieved from relegation despite finishing second bottom following Colwyn Bay’s withdrawal from the league.

Colwyn Bay continued their decent run of form with a 4-1 win at Market Drayton Town, but Mossley’s slim play-off hopes were ended with a surprise 3-1 home defeat to lowly Glossop North End.

Kidsgrove Athletic beat Newcastle Town 1-0 with a late Lewis Bergin winner.
