West Round-up: Atherton hit six to keep on Runcorn's tail

By James Gordon

There were 33 goals scored in the 10 matches in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Division One West on Saturday – and one of those was a goalless draw between Kidsgrove Athletic and Kendal Town!

But leaders Runcorn Linnets only required one to see off visiting Leek Town, courtesy of a 12th minute Kristian Holt goal.

But second-placed Atherton Collieries trail by just one point and did their goal difference a power of good after a 6-2 win over seventh-placed Mossley AFC at The Kensite Stadium.

Little of what was to come was evident early on as Colls led through Jordan Cover`s 11th minute opener which Max Leonard equalised in the 37th minute from the penalty spot.

Dan Lambert restored the home side's lead immediately after the break, only for a second spot-kick conversion from Leonard to pull the Lilywhites back on terms in the 53rd minute.

But some terrific attacking football from Colls blew Mossley away after that as Cover went on to complete his hat-trick and Tom Bentham and Dan Lafferty singles as the hosts ran out 6-2 winners.

Trafford are now third after a 1-0 win at the team who they leap-frogged, Colne, thanks to an 18th minute Ben Harrison goal.

Radcliffe are now in the top five after they beat the side who occupied a spot there before kick-off, Prescot Cables.

Mike Fowler was Boro's hero with a hat-trick in the 45th, 78th and 86th minutes, with Chris Almond's brace replying for Cables.

Chasetown and Skelmersdale United occupy the bottom two spots and both lost on Saturday.

The Scholars lost 4-2 at Llanelian Road to Colwyn Bay, whose Craig Pritchard put them in front just before the break.

Callum Cockerill-Mollett equalised on the hour-mark, but three goals in 6 minutes midway through the half from Josh Brizell from the spot, Lassana Nalatche Mendes and Ashley Woods sealed Bay's win.

Skem lost 3-0 at home to Ramsbottom United, whose Ruben Jerome bagged a brace in the 22nd and 66th minutes and Nic Evangelinos added the other 6 minutes from time.

Elsewhere, Glossop North End won for only the second time to date, 2-0 at home to Market Drayton Town, thanks to Dominic Marie after 37 minutes and Adam Latham just shy of the hour-mark, while Droylsden had a good 3-1 win at Newcastle Town, with Sefton Gonzales' brace of penalties after Domaine Rouse's 13th minute opener saw the Bloods to victory – Matt Ward replying.

Clitheroe were the day's other winners, 2-1 at Widnes, thanks to Josh Gregory and Max Hazeldine efforts just before the break being enough, despite Kevin Towey's reply just after half-time.
