West Round-up: Colls go top in style

By James Gordon

Atherton Collieries returned to the summit of the EVO-STIK League West Division with a stunning victory at Runcorn Linnets.

Colls, who led the table earlier in the season, leapfrogged both Linnets and Radcliffe thanks to goals from Vincent Bailey, Ben Conway and Ian Rowlands.

Radcliffe suffered only their second away league defeat of the season as they went down 2-1 at 10 man Leek Town in a physical encounter.

The hosts led 2-0 at the break thanks to Aaron Bott and Daniel Trickett-Smith, and despite Louis Myers pulling one back before the hour, Radcliffe suffered a second defeat in four matches.

Mossley are the form team in the division and they made it five wins in their last six with a 5-1 thumping of Market Drayton Town.

Max Leonard and Ben Halfacre both scored a brace as they turned a 1-0 half time advantage in to a big win, with William Wells scoring for the visitors.

The lights went out on Droylsden in their game at home to Glossop North End. They led 1-0 through Sefton Gonzales when the floodlights failed on 48 minutes.

Skelmersdale picked up only their ninth point of the season as George Donnelly’s injury-time equaliser earned them a 1-1 draw at Newcastle Town.

Newcastle had led since the 18th minute through Joshua Glover, but were forced to share the points with Skem, who remain four points adrift at the bottom after nearest rivals Kendal Town also came from behind to earn a credible point at Prescot Cables.

That result meant Cables slipped out of the play-off places, with Steven Yawson cancelling out Matthew Hamilton’s opener.

Colne are within three points of the play-off places, thanks to a 1-0 win at Kidsgrove Athletic, Alex Curran scoring the game’s only goal from the penalty spot.

Sandwiched in between Prescot and Colne are Trafford, who defeated Chasetown 3-0 at Shawe View, Matthew Bryan, James Moore and Liam Ellis scoring the goals.

In the other game, there were four second half goals as Widnes drew 2-2 at home to Colwyn Bay.

Niall Watson marked his Widnes debut with a goal, before the Welshmen turned it around through Astley Mulholland and Craig Pritchard.

George Lomax equalised two minutes from time as both sides remain mid-table.
