Whitby Town boss pleased with ‘crazy’ win over FC United of Manchester

Whitby Town joint-manager Nathan Haslam has praised his side’s tenacity after they climbed to sixth in the Pitching In Northern Premier League Premier Division with a dramatic 4-3 victory away at FC United of Manchester.

The Blues were pegged back twice at Broadhurst Park, but Jacob Hazel’s 70th-minute strike was enough to see them move level on 46 points with Buxton, who currently occupy the final play-off place.

Bradley Fewster continued his excellent recent form with a first-half double, taking his tally for the season to seven.

Speaking after the match, Haslam admitted his side needed to work hard to overcome their determined hosts.

“It was a crazy game, really entertaining if you were a neutral,” he said.

“We were out of the blocks [quickly]. That was always the plan, to get on the front foot. We thought we could play on their weakness, and it worked.

“For all our play was really good to take us into the lead, they came back into it with some brilliant dead-ball play.”

Discussing Fewster’s brace, Haslam added: “It’ll do his confidence the world of good.

“He’s making an impact in every game now, and he’s always thinking. He is in great form at the minute.”

Elsewhere in the division, South Shields ran out 3-1 winners at home to Witton Albion in new boss Kevin Phillips’ first game at Mariners Park.

The former England international maintained his 100% start thanks to Cedric Main’s early finish and goals either side of the half-time break from young striker Sam Hodgson.

They move to within three points of league leaders Matlock Town and still have a game in hand.

Morpeth Town were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Stalybridge Celtic, in a game that featured two goals inside the final 10 minutes.

Andrew Johnson thought he had won it for the hosts with seven minutes of normal time remaining, but the Celts’ response was quick in the form of Raul Correia’s well-taken lob four minutes from time.

Stafford Rangers moved up to eighth in the table with a 1-0 win away at Radcliffe.

Tom Tonks’ close-range finish just before half-time was enough to see the visitors leave Greater Manchester with all three points.

And in the battle near the bottom, Stuart Beavon helped Mickleover climb further away from the relegation zone at the expense of struggling Nantwich Town.

Beavon’s emphatic finish was enough to separate the two sides at the Weaver Stadium.
