Whitby Town bring in ex-Boro midfielder

Whitby Town have completed the signing of former Middlesbrough Academy midfielder Alfie Doherty.

The 19-year-old had been with the Championship side since the age of nine but was released earlier this summer.

Now he links up with the Seasiders following a successful run-out as a trialist in Tuesday night's 9-0 friendly win against Redcar Athletic.

He found himself on the scoresheet during that fixture, netting Whitby's third of the evening.

During the latter stages of his time at Boro, Doherty spent brief spells out on loan at Hebburn Town and Marske United.

The Seasiders begin the new season with a home game against Atherton Collieries on Saturday.
