Wilkinson, 24, started his career at Huddersfield Town before moving on to Hyde United, Bradford Park Avenue, Buxton and Ossett, and arrived at Brighouse last summer.
He told the Brighouse Echo: "When I also weighed up the travelling from my new home in Cleckheaton and was looking at a two hour plus round trip on training nights, I also didn't fancy that.
“It would have been a move back up the ladder going into a side in the NPL Premier Division but I was very happy and in good form at Brighouse until my season-ending injury back in November against Colne."
Meanwhile, centre back Harrison Beeden, who spent time on loan at Brighouse last season, has been released by Rotherham United.
